Jade carving, stone carving, and wood carving are among the oldest forms of sculpture in China, with works dating back to the Paleolithic era. These art forms are cherished as part of China’s valuable artistic heritage. Master artisans skillfully design and carve jade, stone and wood materials, highlighting their natural colors and shapes to create exquisite works of art.

In the picturesque surroundings of Wancheng Lake in Puwang Town, Yinan County, resides a renowned folk artist, Cao Jinguo. Born into a poor family, Cao dropped out of school at a young age. In 1995, driven by his artistic aspirations, he moved to Putian, Fujian, to study carving techniques under esteemed masters. Over time, he forged his own path in the world of craftsmanship. Through years of practice and a profound passion for art, Cao developed a unique artistic language and style.

In his carving process, Cao exhibits a keen understanding of artistic expression and spatial composition, elevating the simple beauty of natural materials into artistic beauty. His works faithfully capture his creative intentions, resulting in breathtaking masterpieces.

As intangible cultural heritage faces challenges in preservation and inheritance, such as the risk of losing traditional craftsmanship and the marginalization of traditional culture, Cao remains steadfast in his belief: “Having chosen this path, I am committed to seeing it through.” His dedication to preserving intangible cultural heritage is unwavering. In August 2019, Cao was recognized by the Ministry of Culture as a “National Craft Art Master” in the cultural talent database.
