Xianzi opera is an ancient form of traditional music that originated in the royal courts and was later passed down to the people. It is part of the stringed instrument music system and is often referred to as “courtly music” due to its elegant, delicate, and subtle vocal tones. The opera holds significant academic value in the fields of opera and musicology. With a history spanning over 300 years, Xianzi opera has become widely popular in southern Shandong Province, where it continues to be beloved by local communities. In 2016, it was included in the fourth batch of Shandong’s provincial intangible cultural heritage list.
The introduction of Xianzi opera to Beiyanwen Village in Zhangzhuang Town, Yinan County, Shandong Province dates back to the late Qing Dynasty when the “Beiyanwen Xianzi Opera Student Class” was established. The Xianzi opera in the counties and districts of southern Shandong traces its origins to this village.

To this day, the art form remains well-preserved, retaining its original vocal style and character, earning it the nickname “a living fossil of ancient opera.” “Beiyanwen Xianzi opera” features straightforward, easy-to-understand lyrics and melodies with strong local flavor, and is primarily accompanied by the xianzi, along with instruments such as the liuyeqin, flute, sheng, pipa, and erhu. The repertoire includes over 300 pieces, each with vivid colors and innovative tones.
In recent years, local Xianzi opera troupes have worked to preserve this traditional Chinese art form by offering free opera classes and introducing opera performances to schools. Through these initiatives, they teach students both the performing techniques and classic songs of Xianzi opera, allowing children to experience the charm of traditional opera by watching, listening, learning, and singing.
