The Luxi blackhead sheep, a specialized meat breed developed through years of research led by the Institute of Animal Science and Veterinary Medicine, Shandong Academy of Agricultural Sciences, combines the genetic strengths of the Blackhead Dorper (sire line) and Small-tailed Han sheep (dam line). Characterized by robust build, rapid growth, high fertility, and superior meat yield, this breed delivers tender and nutrient-rich mutton. Its emergence marks a milestone in advancing China’s mutton industry through technological innovation and sustainable development.

At Xingtang Animal Husbandry Co., Ltd. in Dongchangfu District, Liaocheng City, Shandong Province, modern farming practices redefine traditional husbandry. Unlike traditional, cluttered sheep farms, the facilities here are neatly divided into feeding, resting, and breeding areas. The air carries no pungent odor but instead a faint aroma of forage. Inside the barns, thriving herds of Luxi blackhead sheep graze contentedly or amble leisurely, embodying vitality under optimized management.

From breeding and farming to slaughtering and processing, Xingtang has built a fully integrated industrial chain. Today, more than 200 local households have joined in cooperative breeding, supported by the company’s provision of breeding stock, technical training, and guaranteed buyback services. This model has boosted farmers’ average annual income by 30,000 yuan. From breakthroughs in the laboratory to widespread adoption in the field, the “Xingtang Model” is leveraging this premium breed to catalyze modernization across northern China’s mutton sector, writing a vibrant chapter in rural revitalization.
