On December 15, Jiangsu Chefang 500kV Substation’s large-scale expansion project – the province’s first key 500kV power grid project for peak winter supply this year – was put into operation. It will significantly enhance the power supply capacity and reliability of the power grid in southern Suzhou, forging a solid energy security barrier for the winter peak power demand and boosting the high-quality economic and social development of Jiangsu and the Yangtze River Delta region.
Located in Suzhou Industrial Park, Jiangsu Chefang 500kV Substation was commissioned in 2001 and serves as a crucial hub connecting Suzhou’s power grid to the East China Power Grid. Driven by economic and social development, the growth in power load has increased the supply pressure on the regional power grid. In October 2024, the large-scale expansion of the substation kicked off, involving the construction of one 1,000 MVA main transformer, 6 outgoing lines at 500kV, and 9 outgoing lines at 220kV. The added 1 million kilowatts of transformation capacity can meet the annual electricity needs of approximately 3 million households.
“As the construction area is adjacent to the 500kV high-voltage live equipment and lines of the existing substation, safety is the top priority,” said Xing Zhihao, project manager of State Grid Jiangsu Electric Power Engineering Consulting Co., Ltd. He noted that strict control over construction organization and operation procedures has been implemented on-site, with laser electronic fences deployed to form an intelligent protection network. Additionally, full-process on-site supervision by supervisors and real-time inspections by dedicated construction safety supervisors have established a dual safety barrier combining “technological defense + human defense,” ensuring the smooth commissioning of the project.
“After the project is put into operation, it will greatly enhance the regional power supply capacity, meet the electricity demand of high-end loads such as semiconductor enterprises and computing power centers in southern Suzhou, and provide solid support for the stable operation of the power grid during the peak winter supply period,” Xing Zhihao added.
Jiangsu has launched 10 key backbone network projects and 1,007 distribution network projects for peak winter supply this year. Once all these projects are put into operation, they will further improve the province’s power grid structure, meet the demand for large-scale grid connection of new energy in northern Jiangsu, enhance the power supply capacity of the power grid in southern Jiangsu, and effectively ensure the safe and reliable winter electricity supply for enterprises and residents in Jiangsu.
