Feixian County in Shandong Brings Science to Life with Immersive Programs

Recently, at the Hepingli Science Popularization Experience Center in Feixian County, Shandong Province, 10-year-old Li Weiming put on a VR headset and waved his hands excitedly in midair, as if reaching out to touch a distant galaxy. Behind him, a group of friends stood ready to embark on their own journey of discovery. Since opening in June this year, this futuristic “science playground” has attracted more than 6,000 local residents, turning the appeal of science into something tangible and immersive.

 

This scene, however, represents just one highlight of Feixian’s countywide drive to promote public science literacy. Programs are tailored to different groups to meet diverse needs. Under its youth science enrichment initiative, the “Feixian Youth Science Tour” brings children to the forefront of technological innovation, offering immersive experiences that showcase the wonders of science and the appeal of modern industry. Through hands-on experiments and interactive activities, the program sparks curiosity, nurtures a love of science, and inspires innovative thinking.

 

The seeds of science are also being sown in the fields. County agricultural technicians have moved the classroom to the farmland, providing face-to-face guidance to farmers on pest control and smart agriculture applications. Many experts have also taken on the role of “cloud-based instructors,” delivering real-time online technical support to farming households.

 

Communities across the county are equally engaged. During health outreach campaigns, long lines form at free clinics staffed by leading physicians, while residents take turns practicing CPR on training mannequins during emergency response workshops. Like gentle spring rain, evidence-based health knowledge is steadily permeating everyday life.

 

Behind this growing momentum is a strong service network. Feixian County has established the “Pioneer Volunteer Service Team,” which has organized more than 100 volunteer activities, including science lectures. With professional expertise and enthusiasm, these volunteers have woven a science popularization network that spans the entire county and reaches deep into its social fabric.

 

In Feixian County, science is no longer abstract – it is a hands-on experience, practical guidance in the fields, and a spark in a child’s eyes. As science popularization comes alive, the county gains a solid foundation and powerful momentum for high-quality development.
