Erjiaxian is a traditional opera genre prevalent in eastern and northern Henan, southwestern Shandong, and northern Anhui. Its name derives from its primary accompanying instrument, the sihu, which features four strings, with each pair strung together and played using horsehair, hence the term “Erjiaxian“ (meaning “two pairs of strings“).
Renowned for its intricate vocal techniques, Erjiaxian is praised with the saying, “Stand still and sing 108 lines flawlessly,“ and enjoys the reputation of captivating audiences with just a single phrase. The unique feature of Erjiaxian lies in its seamless alternation between true and falsetto voices, where the primary melody is delivered in a natural voice, while the ending notes are elevated by an octave and sung in falsetto. It was included in the list of intangible cultural heritage under the category of minor opera genres in 2008.
The Wusongzhuang Nanci Erjiaxian from Zudian Town, Shen County, is distinguished by its lively and engaging performances, sonorous and vigorous vocal style, clear enunciation, and melodious charm imbued with the rich local flavor of southwestern Shandong. Endearingly referred to as “half a bowl of honey“ due to its sweetness and cultural significance, it holds immense artistic and historical value.
Its repertoire includes classic operas such as Taihuangshan, The Three Scholars, The Execution of Yang Balang, The Tale of the Golden Bracelet and Jade Ring, and Meng Jiangnu‘s Lament at the Great Wall, alongside modern productions like Joy by the Riverside and A Spike of Red Sorghum. Furthermore, the troupe has actively produced original works reflecting contemporary themes, including The New Face of Shen County, The Beauty of Shen County, and Song of Letting Go.
