UnionPay International Launches Offer throughout Japan for global business tourists

TOKYO

UnionPay card acceptance in Japan increases to 80%

As Japan has recently relaxed its entry policy, international tourists and business travelers are gradually recovering. Against this backdrop, UnionPay International is focusing on improving the payment experience in business travel scenarios, taking into account the immediate needs of travel during special periods, and announcing the launch of exclusive promotions to cover merchants across Japan, adding protection for cross-border business travel and boosting economic and trade recovery.

UnionPay is one of the world’s three largest international card organizations. On the basis of expanding its acceptance network to 181 countries and regions, UnionPay has accelerated the launch of UnionPay cards, mobile payments and other “universal cross-border” payment products outside of mainland China, which are widely favored: UnionPay cards have been issued in 77 countries and regions worldwide, with a cumulative issuance of over 190 million cards outside of mainland China. In particular, in the Asia-Pacific region, 95% of debit cards in Hong Kong and Macau are “UnionPay” cards, and the average resident of South Korea holds a UnionPay card. Besides bankcard, UnionPay International also offer over 140 mobile payment products in 30 countries and regions that support binding UnionPay cards, covering UnionPayApp, QR code wallets, and UnionPay mobile QuickPass, to meet consumers’ differentiated payment habits, and are favored, especially in the Asia-Pacific region, where an average of one in four people in Hong Kong and Macau use UnionPay for mobile phone purchases. Singapore’s PayLah!, Malaysia’s GoPayz and many other local wallets have also been connected to the UnionPay network.

To support local merchants to better welcome the recovery of cross-border traffic, UnionPay International has worked with local financial institutions and well-known merchants to accelerate the improvement of the acceptance environment for local UnionPay payment products: as of the first half of this year, the acceptance coverage rate in Japan reached 80%. Tokyo and Osaka are close to full acceptance coverage, with over 487,000 merchants supporting UnionPay QR code or QuickPass. The business travel scenario continues to be rich: famous hotels such as New Otani and Prince Hotel, thousands of local restaurants such as Food and Beverage, local cabs and transportation cards all support UnionPay.

UnionPay International has also joined hands with local merchants to launch exclusive promotions. After successful registration, consumers can enjoy a discount of up to 5,000 yen on a single purchase of 500 yen or more at offline stores that support UnionPay throughout Japan. The offer can also be stacked with the cashback offer, and consumers can enjoy additional cashback with their UnionPay cross-border cashback cards.

In recent years, UnionPay International has accelerated the pace of localization of its Japanese business to expand high-quality, secure and convenient mobile payment services to local residents in Japan, and currently, CCB Tokyo, Sumitomo Mitsui Card Corporation, Mitsubishi UFJ NICOS and other leading local card issuers have issued them. Local residents who apply for these cards can use them conveniently locally or in 181 countries and regions around the world.
