As the saying goes, “In summer, pick lotus seeds; in winter, dig lotus roots.” In recent years, Jindouying Town in Yanggu County, Liaocheng, Shandong Province, has vigorously developed the “One Village, One Product” initiative to promote rural industrial revitalization. It actively cultivates the characteristic industry of lotus root planting in Lianhuachi, broadening the path to prosperity for the local residents.

The tradition of lotus root cultivation has long been a part of Lianhuachi, Jindouying Town, Yanggu Town. However, for many years, farmers practiced scattered planting methods, which hindered scalability, resulting in stagnant incomes for lotus farmers. Responding to this challenge, Jindouying Town is committed to rural revitalization through industrial development. Tailoring its approach to the village’s specific needs, it has devised a plan to boost the lotus root industry. Drawing on the village’s historical expertise in lotus root cultivation and the natural advantages offered by the Jindi River, it has adopted the “party branch + cooperative + base + farmers” model. In tandem with efforts to enhance the area’s aesthetic appeal, it actively promotes lotus root cultivation, encourages community involvement, and emphasizes the creation of distinct local products through the “One Village, One Product” initiative.

“I have been planting lotus roots for many years. My lotus roots have a crispy and tender texture and good taste. They’ve gained popularity in the market, and through years of dedication, I’ve built a loyal customer base, primarily supplying major supermarkets and restaurants,” said Yang Shiyong, who is a major lotus root grower in Lianghuachi Qicun. Although not typically one to speak much, Yang’s passion for the white lotus roots he cultivates is unmistakable.

The cultivation of lotus roots not only enriches the local community but also enhances the picturesque landscape of Jindouying Town. During the summer, the blooming lotus flowers in the fields gently sway in the breeze, drawing numerous visitors and creating a charming rural attraction that fosters the development of rural tourism. Looking ahead, Jindouying Town aims to integrate lotus roots from Lianhuachi with e-commerce. By leveraging online platforms, lotus roots from the town will be distributed nationwide, paving the way for a sustainable and environmentally friendly avenue to increase income and prosperity for its residents.
